At the end of January, I’m going to be taking down a story of mine from Wattpad that has been posted there since 2015.
That story is All That is Gold, a fun, messy, satirical take on a high school hierarchy that used to bring me such joy. These days, though? No joy to be found, not an ounce in sight. And if I’ve learned anything from the lovely Marie Kondo, it’s to get rid of the things that don’t bring you joy.
It makes me really sad that I can’t feel joyful about that story anymore. Was it ever a favorite of mine? Goodness, no! But I loved the twists and turns, the character development and regression, and the commentary on our capitalist society. It was fun!! It was trashy!! It was a good time!!
And there are so many people out there who feel the same way about it. There are people who love that story and call it one of their favorites. I can’t possibly tell you just how much that means to me. I will always cherish the people who have been kind to me over the years and have shown me so much love. They’re the ones who make braving this scary internet world worth it.
But there’s definitely a lot of bad that comes with the good, and at this point, after five years, the bad has beaten me down. It’s stolen my joy, and the only way I can think of to get it back is to take down this story.
Plenty of people have asked me to explain why I’m planning to take it down, so let me share with you, point by point, why that’s going to be happening and what I’ve faced over the years.

If you’ve been keeping up with what I’ve been posting on Wattpad and Radish, you may have noticed something interesting… there are new chapters of Once Upon a One Night Stand.
To some of you, this might seem a little odd. Simone, you say. Hasn’t that story been complete on Wattpad since 2015? And my answer is: yes, you are correct! That story, Book #1 of The Fairytale Series has been complete for nearly 5 years now. I’ve even written three more books in the Fairytale Series since then! So why in the world would I continue a story that’s been complete for years now?
Well, let me explain…

I’ll be the first to admit that I love astrology.
Do I truly believe in it? Uhhh… we’ll get back to that. Can your entire life and personality be boiled down to what a bunch of planets supposedly represent? No comment. Is it fun as heck to read about yourself and say, “Oh my God, that is so me,” to the vaguest descriptions? YES.
I know I’m not alone in that, which is probably why a common question I get about my characters is what’s their sign?
To all of those who have asked, I’m finally going to reveal the sun signs of my main characters! Of course, there’s more to astrology than sun signs (like moon signs, rising signs, etc.) but for the sake of my sanity, we gotta keep this simple.
In this post (Part 1) you’ll find the signs of the characters from The Fairytale Series (OUAONS, AN, Dryland, R&T) and All That is Gold. For my other stories and characters, check back in the future for Part 2!
Here we go!

We’re back for another episode of Origin Stories, where I—you guessed it—talk about the origins of my stories! And today we’re going to be talking about Book #2 in the Fairytale Series, Arabian Nights.
I suggest checking out the post on Once Upon a One Night Stand, Book #1 in the Fairytale Series, before heading into this one so you have a little more background. And timeline wise, we’ve finally moved fully into the Wattpad days…

I recently removed a four-book series (The Fairytale Series) from my Wattpad profile.
A week prior to that, I announced that I was going to take a break from the site and go on a bit of a hiatus.
A month before that, I started watching Marie Kondo‘s show on Netflix, Tidying Up With Marie Kondo.
Re-discovering the KonMari method, which I’d heard about years before, made me realize something: I was hanging on to things that no longer brought me joy. While some of those things were clothes and knick-knacks, some of them were my own stories.
I thought simply taking a break would be enough to maybe feel that joy again, but I quickly began to realize that it wouldn’t be enough. Those stories had to go. I needed them and (readers’ interaction with them) to stop taking up valuable real estate in my mind.
So I sat down and asked myself a simple question.
“Do these stories spark joy?”

Welcome back for another installment of Origin Stories, where I talk about the origins of my stories! In today’s post, I’m going to be talking about turnpike, a dark short-story of mine.
I’ve previously discussed Once Upon a One Night Stand and All That is Gold, which you should check out first for some extra background and context!
Timeline wise, we’re still in the Plagiarism Haven days, though that era was slowly coming to an end…

I’m burned out.
It’s taken me a while to truly understand and acknowledge that, but there’s no ignoring it now. I’m burned out and have been for about a year now.
I’m feeling the same way I did when I took about a two year break from writing a while back. And you know what? Those two years were some of the best of my life. I don’t regret taking a break from writing because I needed it. I had to recharge. I needed to live my life so that I could come back and put those experiences down on the page.
At the moment, I don’t have the luxury of completely cutting out writing like I did back then. There are contracts and promises I have to fulfill first, but it’s past time that I started taking a few things off my extremely full plate.
Another thing it comes down to is this: I don’t currently have any content I want to share on Wattpad.
That’s not to say I don’t have ideas. Believe me, there are so many things I want to write, so many ideas I want to pursue. But at this point, the pressure I put on myself to post new stories and chapters as often as possible has contributed to the way I’m currently feeling.
So I’m taking a break from Wattpad and using that time to focus on and remember why I enjoy writing in the first place, without the added pressure of being expected to update regularly. Because right now, writing feels like some terrible obligation that fills me with dread instead of excitement. I don’t like that.
All of that said, these are the steps I’m going to take to help get myself back on track.
