Simone Bought What? – January ’19

Yet another goal of mine for 2019 is to start saving more money. I’m in my 20s, I’m out of school, and I have Adult Responsibilities that must be taken care of, which means having a pretty strict budget.

Usually, I’m pretty good at budgeting my money (that sound you hear is my bank account laughing in the distance) but sometimes when I get paid, all I wanna do is go full Treat Yo’ Self. So I figured, well, if I’m gonna Treat Myself, I also have to hold myself accountable for it.

So, here are the Treat Yo’ Self items that I bought in January.

Brunch at Urbana – These days, I’m honestly too busy to do brunch more than once a month. I work practically 7 days a week in some capacity or another, so finding free time, even on weekends, can be difficult. That means brunch is my one big splurge, both time and money wise, every month. It’s a chance to eat good food, drink bottomless mimosas, and catch up with my buddies. So your girl usually goes pretty hard. In total, I dropped about $50 on brunch at my favorite place, which is kind of Yikes, but considering it’s a once-a-month social engagement, something I don’t do much of otherwise (minus maybe drinking some wine at a friend’s apartment every other week), it’s worth it to me.

Sephora – I always seem to find myself in the store after brunch on the weekend. When I’m lightheaded from a little too much sparkling wine, it calls to me and says, come buy a sheet mask and swatch some pretty highlighters. So I always do. Thankfully, the sheet masks there that I like are $6, so it’s not a huge splurge, and I walk out with glitter all over me, which is an automatic day brightener.

Lilly Pulitzer – Okay, in my defense, Lilly Pulitzer only has sales twice a year in January and August, and that’s the only time I let myself buy anything from the brand. My personal style ranges from “colorful preppy beach witch” to “all-black athleisure witch” so Lilly items usually fall into the former category. $130 for two dresses does seem a little steep in retrospect, but compared to Lilly’s normal prices, it’s like a 2-for-1 deal.

The Ordinary – I was running low on my favorite lactic acid serum, so it was time to restock. I don’t order from them often, so I figured I’d also try a few new products as well! I’m gonna give their Glycolic Toning Solution and their AHA + BHA Peeling Solution a shot. For 5 skincare items, $36 is pretty darn reasonable.

Bijou Candles – I’d been eyeing these candles for quite some time, and when they were having a buy-one-get-one travel candle sale, I added a few to my cart, just for kicks. I wasn’t planning to buy them, but then I had a Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day in which my stress levels and blood pressure were through the roof, and all I could think was, “I need to buy more candles.” So I bought more candles. $50 later and I’m in candle heaven.

Amazon – I spite-bought a new electric kettle. Don’t ask. $30.

Grand total spent on Treat Yo’ Self items this month: $302

Seeing it all added up, I’m definitely looking like this 😬 right now. That’s a decent chunk of money right there. But here’s the thing: even though I bought relatively “frivolous” items this month, they’re all things that I either use often or simply just enjoy. I love brunch and I got to see my friends. Sheet masks are my favorite self-care because you can go outside and scare your neighbor while wearing one. Lilly Pulitzer only has sales twice a year and I really liked both of those dresses. Skincare is important to me. I won’t need to buy another candle for a year—okay, maybe several months. And I drink SO MUCH tea so I’m definitely gonna get my money’s worth out of that kettle.

Spending money is both thrilling and nauseating, but I made sure I could afford those items before buying them. I think that’s an important thing to remember when you’re trying to Treat Yo’ Self. Did I need those candles or those dresses? No. But those aren’t items I’m out here purchasing every single month, so I knew it was okay to splurge a little. Next month, however, you won’t catch me buying any new dresses or candles (I hope)

Do you have a budget you try to stick to every month? Do you believe in Treating Yourself? Let me know in the comments!

  1. i just looked at my bank account and oof, that one hurt. now that i’m in school, i have a hard time justifying buying clothing and stuff like that, but it’s buying food and eating out that’s the problem for me because i’m too lazy to cook or bring food to school with me, and i’m surrounded by restaurants. i started off with a budgeting app but it somehow got disconnected from my bank account which is… so… unfortunate. how terrible that i have to keep living in a comfortable state of denial
